Reinterpreting the bed & breakfast experience in Prince Edward County
THINGS TO KNOW
Here are answers to some of your most frequent questions. And, of course, if you have a question that isn’t fully answered here, please contact us.
-
Checking in and outCheck-in is from 3pm to 9pm. If you are arriving later than that we will communicate with you for a self-check-in. Check-out is 11am. You will have enough time for brunch that morning before heading out.

Travel and locationYou will need a vehicle when visiting Prince Edward County. The County (as locals call it) is a very large island, almost twice the size of Toronto, with winding scenic roads. The Wilfrid is conveniently located a quick 15-minute drive to the main town of Picton where you’ll find great restaurants and shopping and a 20-minute drive to Sandbanks Provincial Park. Please note, there are no restaurants in walking distance from us. The beauty of coming back to our peaceful starry-sky farmhouse after a day of exploring makes the drives totally worth it! Driving to The Wilfrid from Toronto is a 2.5 hour trip, from Ottawa it is 3 hours and from Montreal, you can count on just under 4 hours. We are 1 hour from Kingston. An ideal location for international tourists to explore city and countryside on a Canadian trip. And for Canadians to meet up with friends from Ontario and Quebec provinces. If you are driving from the East (Kingston, Ottawa, Montreal) we highly recommend taking the free ride on Glenora Ferry to arrive in or depart from Prince Edward County. A very scenic way to start or end your trip. If you are arriving by train, the closest VIA station is Belleville. There is an AVIS car rental service at the station itself. If you want to book a taxi for your evenings out, we recommend pre-booking your ride hours in advance with The Taxi Guy or downloading the driving service app URIDE.
-
Parking and charging stationsParking is free at The Wilfrid and conveniently located steps from the guest entrance. We will greet you when you pull in and are always there to help you carry some luggage in. If you drive an electric vehicle there are public charging stations in Picton, Bloomfield, Wellington as well as at many wineries. Should you prefer to charge your car overnight, we offer overnight charging for $16/night.

Internet and televisionNeed to get a bit of work done or want to catch up on the latest? Rejoice! We have free high speed WiFi throughout. The Suite even has a full-sized desk to work at. The White and The Green rooms do not have televisions, if you want to catch up on episodes or watch a movie, head downstairs to the cozy library room where there’s a large smart tv with all your favourite apps all ready to tune in. If you want to watch tv in bed, be sure to choose The Suite, it’s the only one with in-room smart tv.
-
Front deskThe Wilfrid is our home, we live on the premises and are here to answer your questions and help you out any way we can. We’re available from 7am to 9pm daily and easily reachable by text or face-to-face chats.
-
Bringing petsWe do not welcome pets at The Wilfrid except, of course, for service dogs. If you can’t leave your furry friend behind, there is a local pet hotel nearby where you can enjoy a stay at The Wilfrid and spend the day with your trusty companion – it’s like having your cake and eating it too!
-
Minimum stayWe always require a minimum 2-night stay. We find the ideal length of stay to explore Prince Edward County and have a relaxing experience is 3 to 4 nights.
-
RatesThere’s only one way to book a stay at The Wilfrid, through our website. That guarantees you the best rate, with no third-party dipping in your pocketbook. Unlike most hotels and accommodations, our room rates NEVER vary across seasons and between weekdays and weekends. We deliver the same hands-on Wilfrid experience on a Wednesday in February as on a Saturday in August so why should you pay more? The rate you see on the website covers double occupancy and has no added service or room cleaning fees. It is subject to taxes (you know what they say…). A 4% Municipal Accommodation Tax is applied to all stays in Prince Edward County, as well as the 13% GST.
-
PaymentsWe take 100% payment at the time of booking, nothing left to settle when you are here. Our online booking system accepts all major credit and debit cards. Once you are on-site, any extras you add to your stay or purchases you make at our farm shop can be settled with our secure contactless payment service.
-
Changing or cancelling a bookingWe take 100% payment at the time of booking, nothing left to settle when you are here. You would like to modify or cancel your booking? Just email us at stay@thewilfrid.com and we’ll take care of everything. To change or cancel your reservation, we'll just ask for the email address you used when booking and the date of your check-in. You’ll see and accept the cancellation policy as well as our other booking terms when you go through the online booking process. You can also find them at the bottom of the rooms section. Here’s a quick recap: - Bookings are fully refundable, minus a 20% administration fee, up to 16 days prior to check-in. You can also choose to reschedule your booking (you will have a 6-month window to find a new check-in date on our availability calendar.) - If you need to cancel a booking 9 to 15 days prior to check in you will be refunded 50% of your booking charge. - If you need to cancel a booking within 8 days of your check-in, the booking fees are non-refundable, and the reservation is not available for rescheduling.
-
The dates I searched are no longer available...To see when a particular room has availability, on the Rooms & Booking page, click on the "BOOK THIS ROOM" button on desktop or the "Check Dates" button of a particular room on mobile. You will see which dates are unavailable (crossed out) when you go to select your check-in dates. TROUBLESHOOTING: If you have recently searched for dates and selected a room, our booking system will hold this booking so no one else books it from under you. If you happen to have closed the booking window, it will also prevent you from booking it... Simply close all your tabs on your browser, clear your search history and wait a couple of minutes. Go back to our website and start the search over until the room you wanted reappears. If you're feeling impatient, you can always give us a call and we'll process your booking through our system on the backend.

Early check-in / Late check-outOur small window between the 11am check-out and the 3pm check-in does not allow for early arrivals or late check-outs. If ever you are coming during a quieter period and we can make it happen, we will gladly allow for it at a $70/hour charge. Simply ask us a few days prior to your arrival.

Families and groupsThe Wilfrid is an adult-only accommodation (21 years +). A quiet place to come recharge and disconnect. Although we love children, we designed the Wilfrid experience for the mature traveller. We have 3-rooms each with private ensuite modern bathroom. The White and The Green each have a queen-sized bed. The Suite has 2 sleeping areas each with a queen-sized bed. If you are travelling as a group, please note that you can book all three of the rooms. Our online booking platform does not yet allow for multiple room bookings in a single transaction, so, unfortunately, you will have to make 3 separate bookings. Be sure to enter either 1 or 2 as your number of guests to book The White and The Green and any number of guests from 1 to 4 to book The Suite. Even if you are coming as a group, this remains an adult-only accommodation with all the amenities and services of the bed & breakfast. You will not have access to the kitchen or any extra services not usually offered at The Wilfrid.
-
Events and private hireFrom the house itself to the food, to the uniqueness of the barns and grounds, our place makes for a one-of-a-kind backdrop for any special occasion. If you would like to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, elopement, or any other occasion for 2 to 8 persons, you might want to check out our Private Retreat package. Please note we are not an event venue and can not hold events for groups outside the guests staying at The Wilfrid.
-
FoodThe only thing that will inspire you to get out of your Wilfrid bed: our signature multi-course brunch. It is included in the price of your room and served daily starting at 9am. In the summer season (May to mid-September) we add an 8am seating for those who want to get out and start exploring. Brunch is only open to guests staying at The Wilfrid. When you book a stay with us, we will inquire about any dietary restrictions and/or food allergies. We will do our very best to accommodate all requests as we create an original 4-5 course meal each morning. Keep in mind that there is no menu to choose from and this is a culinary experience for the curious palette. Don’t expect bacon, eggs, waffles, or pancakes;) You can expect a meal sourced from whole foods exclusively. If you want a late afternoon pre-dinner platter of oysters or caviar, these are both on offer and can be added to your online booking or you can let us know a few days prior to checking in. Please keep in mind that, although we offer much more than a standard bed & breakfast, the kitchen is still not for guests use. Apart from a small shared refrigerator on the 2nd floor there are no kitchen amenities. We do not offer dinners at The Wilfrid under the regular bed & breakfast formula. However, we have created Private Retreat for those who would like to experience a full culinary journey including dinners.
-
DrinkWe love those days when the hardest decision is “wine or beer?” Minibars are overrated (literally and figuratively) for that reason, we don’t put them in our rooms, but you’ll find everything you need and more downstairs in The Cellar (our maxi-bar) and farm shop. For drinks of all kinds, including some creative non-alcoholic options, and bites, we’re here to help you find that special bottle, fireside drink and nosh every day until 8pm. Guests can also bring their own libations, these can be consumed in your room. There’s a shared mini refrigerator in the upstairs hallway to keep everything chilled, wine glasses and a bottle opener. As a fully licensed establishment, all alcoholic beverages consumed on the main floor's common areas must be purchased from The Wilfrid Cellar.
-
Sauna BookingsYou can opt-in to include Sauna Session to your stay during the booking process. It is an additional $85/person/2 hour session. When you opt-in it will automatically add 1 session for each guest in the booking. Afterwards, you will receive instructions to pre-schedule your 2-hour session. Sessions are open from 12:30pm to 8:30pm (the last session ends at 10:30pm). You can also play it by ear and choose your time once you are here by letting us know at least 2.5 hours in advance so we can prepare the pools and heat everything. Saunas are exclusive to guests who stay at The Wilfrid and we will always make sure your session is private with no other guests sharing the facilities with you. To find out more and see photos of the sauna circuit follow this link.

What to do while you’re hereWe’ve lived in Prince Edward County for the past 10 years and we love to share all our top recommendations when visiting the area. When you book a stay with us, rest assured, you’ll be receiving a link to our online listing of our favourite restaurants, wineries, breweries, activities, shopping, wine tour operators… along with our top tips to best plan your time with us. It’s your insider’s guide to the best this incredible destination has to offer. On site we have yoga mats for you to use and a scandinavian sauna and water circuit facility. There is a fa fire pit lounge area, picnic table, hammock, table in the barn and big lounge chairs facing our vineyard.
-
CyclingWe are on a quiet rural road, a leisurely 30 minute bike ride to two beautiful remote beaches and some great cycling. You can bring your own wheels and leave them in our barn for safe storage during your stay or choose to lease out bicycles that will be delivered to The Wilfrid through the County Bike Rentals company.
-
All welcome / BienvenueThe Wilfrid is a respectful and inclusive environment. We will not tolerate disrespectful behaviour towards other guests or your hosts, and encourage an open discussion if anyone staying feels unwelcome. We are LGBTQ+ and BIPOC friendly. We both grew up in Quebec and are fully bilingual in English and French and love to learn other languages. Please share some knowledge with us, we're always learning!
-
AccessibilityAs this is an 1840’s home, there are steps and narrow corridors throughout. There are small steps to access the guest entrance. All guest rooms are located on the upper level, up a flight of 16 stairs with a sturdy railing. All common spaces are on the main floor. If you need help bringing your bags to your room, we are here to give you a hand.
-
KitchenWhen you stay in an accommodation that feels like home and is run by a chef (that’s us) it’s tempting to want to hang out in the kitchen. We get it, we love our kitchen, but it is commercially regulated and not available for guests to use.
-
Room serviceWe don’t offer service to the rooms, but you can call down for coffee/tea outside brunch time and we’ll fix you a tray you can enjoy in the library, outside or in your room. Come down and pick up snacks any time from the shop and let us set you up with a nice bottle from The Cellar and some fancy glasses.
-
Hairdryers, irons, shampoo, and moreDon’t worry about trying to fit hairdryers, shampoo, conditioner and shower gels in your suitcase—every one of our rooms is fully stocked. We carry organic, plant-based Telford soaps and hair products - proudly owned by Prince Edward County resident Claire Telford. There’s even a full-sized clothing iron and board for you to use. Save that space for souvenirs!
-
Safety and lost propertyThe Wilfrid is in a rural and very safe setting. You will have a key to lock your room and a unique dedicated door code to enter The Wilfrid during your stay. Unfortunately, we cannot accept responsibility for stolen or lost items. However, every care will be taken to ensure that any items left on our property after departure are returned to you in a timely manner. Please note, there may be a small delivery charge.
-
Fire safetyOur accommodation is fire inspected yearly and fully licenced. Please take a minute to look carefully at the fire safety instructions in your room. Weather permitting, the firepit is light every evening by your hosts and extra logs will be set aside for guests to add to the fire in a safe manner. Guests are not permitted to start the fire, this is part of our Prince Edward County Fire Permit regulations.
-
SmokingWhile smoking is not allowed inside The Wilfrid, by the firepit the world is your oyster.
